The 1921 census of England and Wales was taken on the night of Sunday 19 June 1921. For Tamil family history, it is the single most detailed English record of the pre-Independence diaspora — Tamil seamen in Cardiff and London, medical students at Guy’s and University College Hospital, barristers at Middle Temple and Lincoln’s Inn, nurses at St Bartholomew’s and the London Hospital, and army pensioners settled in the Home Counties after 1918.
The census is held by The National Archives and published by Findmypast (exclusive rights). It is free to access at any UK library that subscribes.
Cities where Tamil families concentrate in the 1921 England census
- London — Poplar and Shadwell (seamen), Bloomsbury (students), Middle Temple (barristers), Marylebone and Kensington (medical staff and ICS candidates)
- Cardiff — Butetown / Tiger Bay lascar community
- Liverpool — waterfront and merchant navy
- Manchester — Owens College (later Victoria University of Manchester) medical school
- Portsmouth and Southampton — returning colonial families with Tamil ayahs and cooks
Scotland was enumerated separately by the General Register Office for Scotland; Ireland’s 1921 census was disrupted by the War of Independence.
Searching tips
- Search by first name + birthplace, not by surname alone. Tamil surnames were transliterated inconsistently in 1921 — try three or four spellings.
- Filter birthplace = "India" or specific Madras Presidency towns.
- Look for household context: a British-Indian officer’s home, a mission-society address, a lascar boarding house.
Cross-referencing the Tamil side
- Tamil Nadu voter search — for the modern relatives in the same district.
- Indenture registers — for siblings who moved to Natal, Fiji or Mauritius.
- Village-level browse — for the specific settlement.
