Not every genealogy site charges. Most national census records are searchable for free through FamilySearch, national archive reading rooms, and public library subscriptions. For Tamil families with a diaspora branch anywhere, the free routes below cover almost every country.
Free national census routes
- UK — FamilySearch (1841–1911), UK library card (Findmypast + Ancestry Library Edition), The National Archives at Kew reading room.
- US — FamilySearch, National Archives (archives.gov), FreeCen.
- Canada — Library and Archives Canada (bac-lac.gc.ca), free.
- Australia — most colonial-era censuses not preserved; State Records offices hold what remains.
- South Africa — some Natal indentured Indian registers online free via FamilySearch and NAIRS (State Archives).
- Ireland — 1901 and 1911 full-text free at census.nationalarchives.ie.
- India — Colonial census returns not preserved at individual level; use India Office Records at British Library (IOR).
For Tamil families specifically
Two searches usually matter most:
- The UK 1921 census — see the 1921 UK Census for Tamil Families guide for the six clusters where Tamil ancestors appear.
- The Ireland 1911 census — some Tamil Catholic families passed through Cork or Dublin en route to Irish Catholic missions. See Irish Birth Records for Tamil Catholic Families.
Cross-referencing to the Tamil side
