How do I start my family tree?
Sign up for a free account, then go to Family. Add yourself first, then your parents and grandparents. That's 7 people in 5 minutes — enough to see your tree take shape.
How do I add people to my tree?
Click "Add person" on the Family page. Fill in the name and any details you know (dates are optional). Then link them as a parent, child, sibling, or spouse of someone already in your tree.
What if I don't know exact dates?
Dates are always optional. You can add approximate years (e.g. "1950s") in the notes field, or leave dates blank and add them later when you find records.
How do I invite family members to collaborate?
Go to your Profile > Share tab. Copy your personal invite link and send it to relatives. When they sign up, you can collaborate on the same tree.
Can I use TamizhConnect in Tamil?
Yes! Go to Profile > Account and change your language to Tamil. The interface supports English, Tamil, and French. You can also add names in Tamil script alongside English.
How many people can I add for free?
The free Explorer plan lets you add up to 5 family members, upload documents, and search indenture records. Upgrade to Researcher for up to 50 people with voter record linking.
Features
What are voter records and how do I link them?
Indian electoral roll records contain names, ages, and addresses. In TamizhConnect, go to Profile > Family Record Link, search your name or EPIC number, and link the matching record. This verifies your identity and helps auto-suggest relatives.
How do indenture record searches work?
Go to the Indenture Search page and enter a name, ship, or reference number. We search over 100,000 historical records from Mauritius, Trinidad, Fiji, Guyana, and more. Results are free to view and you can save them to your tree.
What is the Archive Service?
Our Archive Service digitises your physical documents — ship manifests, birth certificates, temple records, estate records. Upload scans or photos and our team verifies, structures, and adds the data to your tree within 7 days.
How does collaboration work?
When a relative accepts your invite, you can share and co-edit parts of your tree. Each person controls their own data. Collaboration is available on Historian and Heritage plans.
Can I find my ancestor's village in Tamil Nadu?
Yes! Use the Origin Inference tool on the Infer page. Upload a record or enter details, and we'll trace likely origin villages in Tamil Nadu based on names, caste records, and migration patterns.
What are search alerts?
Set up an alert for a name or record you're looking for. When new records matching your search are added to our database, we'll email you automatically. Manage alerts from the Search page.
Billing & Plans
How do I upgrade my plan?
Go to the Pricing page and choose a plan. You can also upgrade from your Profile > Account tab by clicking "Upgrade plan". Payment is handled securely through Stripe.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Subscriptions are month-to-month (or annual) with no lock-in. Cancel from your Profile > Account > Manage Billing. You keep access until the end of your billing period.
Do you offer refunds?
We offer refunds within 7 days of purchase if you haven't used the service extensively. Contact support@tamizhconnect.com with your account email and we'll process it promptly.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) via Stripe. Pricing is shown in your local currency where available (GBP, USD, EUR, INR, MYR, SGD, AUD, NZD).
What's the difference between monthly and annual billing?
Annual billing gives you a discount (typically 2 months free). You can switch between monthly and annual from your billing portal at any time.
Is the Archive Service a subscription?
No. The Archive Service is a one-time payment. You pay once and our team digitises your documents. No recurring charges.
Privacy & Security
Who can see my family tree?
By default, your tree is private — only you can see it. When you invite collaborators, they can see shared parts of the tree. We never sell or share your data with third parties.
Can I export or delete my data?
Yes. Go to Profile > Account to download all your data as a JSON file. To delete your account and all associated data permanently, use the Delete Account button on the same page.
Do you collect DNA data?
No. TamizhConnect is a document-based genealogy platform. We do not collect, store, or process any DNA or genetic data.
How is my data protected?
All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest. We use Supabase with Row Level Security, secure authentication, and regular backups. Read our full Privacy Policy and Data Protection page for details.
