How to Read Tamil Nadu Electoral Rolls
Learn how to search and interpret Tamil Nadu voter records to find living relatives, verify village connections, and extend your family tree back to India.
Tamil Nadu electoral rolls are one of the most powerful tools for Tamil genealogy research. They list millions of names organized by village, ward, and household — making it possible to find living relatives and verify ancestral village connections.
1. What electoral rolls contain
Each voter entry typically includes:
- Name (in Tamil and English transliteration)
- Father's or husband's name
- Age
- House number
- Constituency and polling station
- Gender
The combination of name + father's name + village/ward is enough to identify most individuals and link them to your tree.
2. Why they matter for genealogy
Electoral rolls help you:
- Verify an origin village — if your indenture record says "Thanjavur district," voter rolls can pinpoint the exact village
- Find living relatives — people who stayed behind when your branch migrated
- Confirm family naming patterns — initials, patronymics, and village names that match your oral history
- Bridge the gap between historical records (1800s) and the present day
3. How to search on TamizhConnect
Go to the Voter Record Search page.
Search tips:
- Use the father's name — this is the strongest matching field
- Try initials — many Tamil names use initials (e.g., "R. K. Subramanian")
- Search by village — if you know the ancestral village, browse all entries there
- Expect spelling variants — official transliterations often differ from family usage
4. Interpreting results
When you find a potential match:
- Check the father's name — does it match your known family line?
- Check the age — does it fit the expected generation?
- Check the house number — nearby house numbers often indicate relatives
- Look at neighbours — people listed near your match may share the same surname or be from the same family
5. Connecting to your tree
Once you identify a match:
- Save the voter link to your TamizhConnect account
- Add the person to your family tree with the voter record as evidence
- Search for related names at the same polling station
- Cross-reference with indenture records if your family migrated
The goal is to build a bridge between diaspora records and origin village records — linking the ancestor who left with the family who stayed.
