1921 UK Census Free Access: How Tamil Families Can Search It Without a Subscription

📋 Table of contents (4)

The 1921 UK census is published exclusively by Findmypast, but you do not need a paid subscription to read it. Three legitimate free-access routes cover most searches Tamil families need:

Free-access routes that actually work

  1. UK public libraries. Most county library systems and many London borough libraries hold a Findmypast Library Edition subscription. Access is free to the walk-in reader; some libraries also allow home access with your library card.
  2. The National Archives, Kew. The reading room at Kew has free on-site access to Findmypast and Ancestry. If you are visiting London, this is the most complete setup.
  3. University libraries — Cambridge University Library, the Bodleian, SOAS and University of London libraries hold research subscriptions.

If you are outside the UK, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints operates FamilySearch Centres worldwide with free access to partner databases including some Findmypast collections.

What Tamil families should search for

The 1921 census captured Tamil sepoys and army pensioners, Tamil medical students, Tamil Christian mission-linked staff, Tamil nurses, Tamil barristers, and Tamil ayahs and cooks in the households of returning British-India families. Search by first name + India / Madras / specific Tamil Nadu district as the birthplace.

Full search method is in our 1921 UK Census for Tamil Families guide.

Cross-referencing to Tamil-side records

A 1921 census row names your ancestor but rarely gives the exact Tamil village. TamizhConnect covers the Tamil side:
