If your family is Indo-Fijian with roots in the Madras Presidency, the record trail runs through the National Archives of Fiji and the Girmitiya-Madras slice TamizhConnect indexes. Here is how to work through both — and the specific gaps that trip people up.
Mauritius took the largest share of Tamil indentured labour — roughly 240,000 arrivals through Aapravasi Ghat between 1834 and 1910. Here is how to work through the MGI archive, the III collection, and the French transliterations that trip up first-time researchers.
Trinidad’s Tamil families are a minority within an already-minority community — around 8,000 to 12,000 Madras arrivals across the 1845-1917 window. Here is how to work through the National Archives in Port of Spain, the UK Colonial Office records at Kew, and the family-contributed archives.
Guyana’s Tamil families sit inside the Indo-Guyanese Bhojpuri majority — around 15,000 to 20,000 Madras arrivals across the 1838-1917 window. The 1945 Georgetown fire destroyed much of the official archive, making Kew’s CO 111 papers and the British Guiana Indian Association family archive the primary sources today.
Malaysia’s two million Tamil families came under the kangani system — not classic indenture — and the record trail lives across the Arkib Negara, successor rubber-company archives, and the temple societies that pre-date the government civil registration.
Singapore’s roughly 350,000 Tamil-descent citizens descend from three streams — convict-era labour, kangani-era rubber and port work, and the Chettiar merchant community. Here is how to work through the NAS, the historic Serangoon Road temples, and the Kittangi ledgers.
Sri Lankan Tamil ancestry splits into two communities with two distinct record trails — the historically-settled Jaffna Tamils and the Estate Tamils recruited from Madras Presidency for the Ceylon tea and coffee estates. Different archives, different research paths.
Suriname’s Tamil families are a minority within the Bhojpuri-majority Hindustani community — around 3,000 to 5,000 Madras arrivals across the 1873-1916 window. Records survive well through the Dutch Burgerlijke Stand civil-registration system and the Nationaal Archief in The Hague.
Réunion’s Malbars community traces back to 80,000-100,000 Tamil engagés recruited under French engagisme from 1848 to 1892, mostly through Pondicherry and Karikal. Records live at the Archives Départementales de La Réunion and ANOM Aix-en-Provence, with French transliterations that trip up first-time researchers.
Scanning Tamil books, newspapers, temple books and documents is easy. Getting clean, searchable Tamil text out of them is not.
