Most UK census records can be searched for free — you rarely need to pay a subscription. Four routes cover the vast majority of Tamil family research:
- UK public libraries. Most county library systems hold Ancestry Library Edition and Findmypast Library Edition. On-site access is free with any library card. Some allow home access too.
- The National Archives at Kew. Free walk-in access to Ancestry and Findmypast in the reading room. If you can visit London, this is the most complete setup for a research day.
- FamilySearch.org. The 1841 to 1911 censuses are largely free. The 1921 census is not on FamilySearch (Findmypast exclusive).
- University libraries — SOAS, Cambridge University Library, the Bodleian, and the University of London libraries hold research subscriptions accessible to registered readers.
Which years are on which service
- Free on FamilySearch: 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, 1911 (all England, Wales, and Scotland censuses to 1911).
- 1921 census: Findmypast exclusive. Free via UK library subscriptions and at Kew.
- 1939 Register: Findmypast and Ancestry. Free via UK library subscriptions and at Kew.
What Tamil families should search for
