English civil death registration began on 1 July 1837. Since that date, every death in England and Wales has been recorded by a local registrar and indexed at the General Register Office (GRO). For Tamil family history, this is the primary British-side death record.
What is captured and where to search
- Free indexes — FreeBMD, FamilySearch, Findmypast, and the GRO online index (gro.gov.uk).
- Certified copies — £11 from GRO; needed for full details (cause of death, informant).
- Registration districts — a district can cover multiple parishes; check the district-to-parish mapping if a search comes up empty.
Full details of what a UK death record contains are in the United Kingdom Death Records guide.
