Looking up census records for a Tamil ancestor doesn't work the way a European surname search does. Surname alone rarely produces hits — Anglicised spellings vary, patronymics get truncated, given names get elevated to the surname column. Below is the method that actually works.

The step-by-step lookup

  1. Pick the country and year. For a UK-based Tamil ancestor, start with the 1921 UK census — it has exact birthplace and is the most detailed. For US, start with 1920 or 1930. For Ireland, 1901 or 1911.
  2. Search by given name + birthplace, not surname. Anglicised Tamil surnames vary — try three or four spellings. Given names are more stable.
  3. Filter birthplace by country and district. "India," "Madras," "Ceylon," "Tinnevelly," "Ramnad," "Trichinopoly," "Palayamkottai."
  4. Look at the household context. A Tamil ayah appears in a returning colonial family's home. A Tamil student appears at a college. A Tamil lascar appears at a boarding house. Filter by neighbourhood type.
  5. Save the transcription and the image. Transcriptions have errors — always download the original scan.

  • UK census — Findmypast, Ancestry, or free via FamilySearch (1841 to 1911) and UK library card (1921 and 1939).
  • Ireland census — free at census.nationalarchives.ie (1901 and 1911).
  • US census — FamilySearch (free), Ancestry, MyHeritage.
  • Canada census — Library and Archives Canada (free).
