UK probate records — the wills, grants of administration, and inventories filed when a person dies with an estate to settle — often name every close relative of the deceased. For Tamil families with a British-side ancestor who owned property, held a professional pension, or ran a business in the UK, probate is usually the single richest genealogical source.

Where UK probate records are held

  • HMCTS Probate Registry (probatesearch.service.gov.uk) — England and Wales, 1858 to present. Free calendar search; £1.50 per PDF download.
  • The National Archives, Kew — pre-1858 English wills (Prerogative Court of Canterbury, PCC).
  • Scottish Wills and Testaments — ScotlandsPeople (scotlandspeople.gov.uk), 1500 to 1925 free indexes.
  • Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) — Northern Ireland probate.
  • National Archives of Ireland — Republic of Ireland probate, some free.

What a UK will contains

  • Full name and address of the testator
  • Date of the will
  • Executors named
  • Beneficiaries — often every close family member, with relationship stated
  • Property, cash, business interests, chattels
  • Sometimes an inventory (schedule of assets)
  • Grant of probate — date and value of the estate

For a Tamil ancestor who died in Britain, the will's naming of beneficiaries is often the single most complete family census — spouses, children, siblings, godchildren, servants and mission-connected legatees may all appear.
